July 9, 1868: The 14th Amendment is Adopted 
On this day in 1868, the 14th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution was ratified.  It extended citizenship and its benefits to “all persons born or naturalized in the United States,” regardless of their race or gender, although it took nearly 100 years for this principle to be enforced.

The first time I lived briefly in New York there was a guy dressed as Jesus giving out free hugs in union square when I arrived and it creeped me out and months later it didn’t and when I ran into him at b - bar months later before I was about to leave I told him that story and that he no longer freaked me out and that he was a symbol of the growth I’d just gone through but he didn’t understand because he was high on coke it seemed and just wanted to keep saying yeah over and over yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah and that’s what I think of when I think of LA: LES in 2005
